One item which I think many households in Singapore are receiving too many of nowadays are advertising leaflets in the mailbox.
Well, from a marketing and advertising standpoint, the outreach is wide. Even if 9 out of 10 individuals might trash it, you could still count on that 1 individual who might pick it up and ultimately call on you for your product or service.
Well, well, it’s just another form of marketing for businesses isn’t it? Alternatively, it is also a great tool to create awareness.
According to a recent article published by Channelnewsasia.com, it is said that most Singaporeans welcome to move.
I had no idea.
I guess the majority of us do not mind targeted mailers, for instance, leaflets and brochures on toddler related materials, or perhaps grocery shopping promotions in our case. However, the bulk of these that we receive are completely random. Well this is understandable, as post office do not conduct a demographic check on each and every household, and it will be extremely hard to track them, especially since people may move away, etc. Also, how willing are we exactly to share these demographic information anyway?
As such, most of these advertising leaflets comes in mass distribution. Every household receives one. To be honest, more often than not, these often ends up in the trash bin.
Yes I know, an absolute waste of paper.
So when it was reported that we could actually opt out of the program, many people were taken aback, that there was actually such an option! Well, if you think about it, such an option should exist, just like for emailers, we could choose to unsubscribe, the same should work for snail mail as well. Unlike emailers where you could unsubscribe by the click of a mouse, this is a bit tricky. How do we go about doing it?
Here is how you can opt out:
- Visit the following site: http://www.singpost.com/contact-us/service-enquiry
- For “Service Type”, choose “Postal”
- For “Category”, choose “Advertising Mail”
- For Sub-category, choose “OPT-OUT Service”
- After which, you can fill out the special form to get an orange No Admail sticker to paste on your mailbox!
As of now, I am still trying to manage those door-to-door type leaflets that we get so very often, especially for new estates. I saw a picture where someone actually hung a box outside their gate, to drop their leaflets in there, and it also helps to keep the common corridor tidy. That’s a great initiative. I would definitely love to try that out!
