And here are the roundups…

Why You Don’t Need to Run with the Cool Kids (Becoming Minimalist)

“The pull towards conformity can be strong. The desire to fit in with popular culture is significant at times. And no matter how old we get, the desire to run with the cool kids can still remain. But within each of us is a desire that is even stronger—the desire to be ourselves, to embrace the things we love and enjoy and make us unique.”

It’s Not About The Money, It’s About The *Lifestyle* (Budgets are Sexy)

“I think we get so caught up in wanting more all the time that we don’t step back to see the overall picture. Or even realize that we have it in our power ALREADY to craft a life we love before hitting our financial goals!”

Retirement is Not a Goal (Full Time Finance)

“FIRE, or Financial Independence Retire Early is all about putting in place changes to become financially independent and retire early. It’s a lofty milestone to be financially independent, or even retire early, but it’s not a goal. Don’t get me wrong, Financial Independence can be extremely important. However, to be your goal the actual point has to be to be financially independent or retire early. But even if you are part of the FIRE community, retirement is not the point.”

Saving for Tomorrow vs. Living for Today (The Simple Dollar)

“There are so many things I could do in my life right now if I simply stopped saving for the future. We could go on some downright amazing trips. We could spend our entire summers abroad until the kids are out of school. We could live in an utterly amazing house, much larger and nicer than the one we live in now. There are so many amazing, wonderful things that we could do today if we weren’t saving for tomorrow. Let’s say that I did decide to go that route. What would I really gain out of it?”

CNA’s ‘Regardless of Class’ is Everything That’s Wrong With Singapore’s Inequality Debate (Rice Media)

“Take for example the above-mentioned segment on IP versus Normal students. I would like to know why there is such a huge gap between the IP and Normal students. I would like to know how much resources each group enjoys, and if it has contributed to the divide. I would like to know if our educational policy of streaming was perhaps misguided in the first place.”

And here is a friendly reminder to take care of yourself this weekend!

  1. I love how you guys keep up with your readings every week and I like having this curated list as a go-to when I need a good quality read! Mr.C and I watched CNA’s “Regardless of Class” and had some interesting conversations about it at home. however this article is right that it was focused on the softer aspects such as being respectful and the mindset versus the cause and what can be done on a policy making level. I still think the show was is commendable for some far reaching mindset change and thoughts.

    1. Glad you love the curated reads! Yes the documentary was well-made and appreciate the thought and effort behind the exercise but agree with what you say about changes made at a policy making level. Having said that, it’s good that this video is generating some healthy discussions and making us rethink about the issue a bit more holistically.
